1. TAKE ACTION!
Here’s some things you can do:
** Contact your Councillors. It does not have to be a long email – even just a few lines helps keep the pressure up. See here for how to contact your Councillors and what we would say. https://handsoffourhomes.org.uk/2013/03/18/does-your-local-councillor-stand-with-tenants-or-with-the-goverment/
** Help us build the demo on 20th April! Put leaflets though doors or posters and flyers in local shops and centres. Get in touch and we can drop some off with you or download the poster here: https://leedshandsoffourhomes.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/demoposter1.pdf
** Join us for our regular flyering session outside the one stop centre on St. George Street on Mondays between 12-2pm. We have flyering sessions elsewhere throughout the week irregularly, if you want to help out at of these get in touch: firstname.lastname@example.org
2. Advice on resisting/challenging the Bedroom Tax
Here’s some advice we’ve gathered. We’re bringing out a comprehensive sheet of advice soon. In the meantime, here’s some pointers.
1) If you receive a ‘Declaration’ or similar from your housing provider, DO NOT SIGN IT.
We know Leeds Jewish Housing Association and others are sending out pseudo-legal documents asking people to take responsibility for paying the bedroom tax. There is no legal obligation for you to sign them, so don’t.
More info here: https://handsoffourhomes.org.uk/2013/03/21/tenants-receive-declaration-documents-from-housing-associations-do-not-sign/
2) If you are sent a letter saying you will be subject to the ‘bedroom tax’ (under-occupancy), you can APPEAL
There’s a blog here from the Combat The Bedroom Tax campaign showing you how to write an appeal over the decision to have your housing benefit cut. The more people who send such an appeal, the better. More info here: http://combatbedroomtax.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/appealing-against-bedroom-tax-decision.html
3) MOST IMPORTANT – Talk to other people affected and decide to resist the bedroom tax together.
It’s important to have people supporting each other if it comes to contesting an eviction and possibly going to court. Keep making contacts, keep supporting each other, and we’ll win this.

4. Other events coming up
Are you coming to our demo on 20th April? Great! Are all your friends, your family and your great Aunt Joan from Scarborough coming too? We have a whole group coming from York, and we’d love to see people from far and wide! Tell your friends and spread the word.
We need YOU to make this big so please get in touch if you can help put up posters, distribute flyers or have any other ideas for how to help promote it.
Demonstrate, 20th April, 12pm, Victoria Gardens – BEDROOM TAX! CAN’T PAY, WON’T PAY!
A huge number of children are affected by the bedroom tax so we want kids to be welcome on the demo. We even have a special Kids Bloc (grown-ups also welcome). If you can help hand out flyers to parents at schools for the Kids Bloc get in touch!
