Hands Off Our Homes Update – June 2014

Hands Off Our Homes is still fighting. We’re meeting monthly (details below) in Central Leeds, we’re still campaigning and giving advice and support. We anticipate more tenants needing this in upcoming months – we really can make a difference if we stick together and spread the message – keep calm, stay put, organise together.  Here’s an inspiring story from South London, where a woman has won her bedroom tax money back because her ‘spare bedroom’ is a living room!

Leeds City Council is suffering cuts and this is affecting staff. There may be strike action in the council soon and we want to mobilise around putting pressure on housing workers not to harass tenants. This could be real solidarity in practice – watch this space.

Some new things on the website:

1. Help!
We’ve updated our advice for people affected by the bedroom tax who don’t know where to start

2. New advice on appealing against a bedroom tax decision
There are SO many grounds to appeal against a bedroom tax. People have won appeals on various different grounds so whatever your circumstances it could well be worth having a go. Please, if you are affected by the bedroom tax and haven’t appealed yet, or know someone affected, PLEASE read this.

New advice on applying for Discretionary Housing Payments and help moving house
Again, if you or anyone you know are affected, please read this.
