LS26 Save Our Homes motion to Trade Union and Party branches

LS26 Save Our Homes has produced a model motion that people can present to their Trade Union branches, at their Labour Party branch or constituency meetings, and indeed at any other forum where group policy is decided.

“This Branch notes with concern the proposals by Pemberstone Ltd to develop the Wordsworth and Sugar Hill Estate in Oulton. The application to Leeds City Council to demolish 70 properties and to replace them with 71 properties for sale –only 15% of which would be “affordable” – will mean the loss of much needed truly affordable properties for rent and the almost certain displacement of the current tenants who will be unable to find housing in the local area which will be financially within their reach.

“We applaud Jeremy Corbyn’s statement that regeneration under a Labour government will be for the benefit of the local people, not private developers  or  property speculators, and we support his call that people who live on an estate that is redeveloped must get a home on the same site and on the same terms as before and that councils will have to win a ballot of existing tenants and leaseholders before any redevelopment scheme can take place. This should apply to tenants renting in the private sector as well as to council tenants, as a condition of any planning permission being granted.

“We call on Leeds City Council to protect the residents of the estate, to take over the properties from Pemberstone Ltd and to turn the homes into Council  Housing stock which can be let to existing and future tenants on long term secure tenancies.

We give our support to the LS26 Save Our Homes campaign and donate £xxxx to their campaign funds. [donation bit optional – obviously depends on the financial status of your organisation, but campaigns like this are very dependent on getting financial backing from unions and other donors!]

(send to Leeds City Council, the Regional Union Secretary, the Constituency Labour Party as applicable)
